Mr. Albert Keith Roberts passed away January 19 at Self Regional HealthCare, losing a valiant 2 year effort to overcome cancer.

He was born November 18, 1925 in Gable, SC, son of Horace and Bessie Caison Roberts and was a graduate of Newberry College and a US Navy veteran of WW II.

Beginning his career in highway construction in 1947 with J. R. Suber & Company in Whitmire, he retired in 1995 as managing partner of Satterfield Construction Company, Greenwood. During this time he spent three years in Costa Rica as construction supervisor of 200 miles of the Inter-American Highway and 10 years with Ballenger Paving Company in Greenville.

He served as President of the SC Asphalt Paving Association and was made Director Emeritus. He also served on the Arbitration Board of the SC DOT. A tough competitor, few of his associates would recognize the indulgent grandfather who delighted in the activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A long time member of Immanuel, he twice served as president of the congregation and council member. Many a pastor valued his presence in the choir, not only for his melodious bass voice but for his ready laugh at their “pulpit jokes”.

He was a patient Gamecock, traveling to most of the “away” games for a number of years. After he and his wife no longer attended the games, the family began the tradition of celebrating his November birthday with a tailgate in the backyard, replete with flags, tent and other Gamecock trappings.

Among his civic activities was a term as President of Habitat for Humanity. He also worked at the Food Bank and was a co-deliverer of Meals-On-Wheels.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Jean Carroll of Newberry; sons Dr. Albert Keith, Jr, (Frances), Thad C. (Sandie); daughters Carroll Dent (Richard), Sheryl Rhoden (Chuck). Grandsons include Eric Dent (Lisa), Brett Dent (Margie), David Roberts (Kim), Thad Rhoden (Lindsey), Chip Rhoden, John Roberts and step granddaughter Carrie Spencer (Brian) and step grandson Chris Cook (Tina). Great grandchildren include 5 year old twins Wilkes and Caison Dent, Hannah and Houston Cook and Olivia, Will and Talon Spencer. He is also survived by a brother, Gerald Roberts (Carolyn) of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
