    Obituary for Mr. William T. (Bill) Akers
    Statesboro, Georgia

    Mr. William T. “Bill” Akers, age 84, died Sunday at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro following a brief illness. Bill was born in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. He was a graduate of Rutgers University College of Agriculture and received his masters from the University of Illinois, College of Agriculture, in 1954.

    Bill served as 1st Lieutenant in the Army from 1954 to 1956 during the Korean War. He was awarded the 1st Army Superior Award for the 364th Infantry Regiment Weapons Pool. Bill worked for the Agricultural Research Division of Lederle Laboratory (a division of American Cyanamid Company), and held five agricultural patents in animal science.

    Bill and his wife Donell owned and operated Statesboro Farm Supply (Ralston Purina dealer), for 16 years. From 1976 to 1977, he built the Bulloch Academy football field and also drove the Gator Bus for five years. Bill served as a staff appraiser for First Federal of Statesboro from 1977 to 1985. He also served as the Director of Business Affairs at Benedictine Military Academy for several years. Bill cherished his farm, gardening and agriculture.

    He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Donell Thompson Akers.

    Surviving are his three children, William Thomas “Bill T” Akers, Jr. and wife Lisa, Lillian Akers Brown, and Esther and William Vickers all of Statesboro; five grandchildren, Mary Katherine Kittrell (Nathan), Jessica and Jeff Vickers, and Lauren and Julianne Akers; a sister, Charlotte A. Matthews of Florida; a brother, Herbert S. Akers, Jr. of Florida and special friends, Jappy and Emily Stringer and Robert and Marie Dixon.

    Bill lived his life under God. His motto was God, Family and Country.

    Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

    Graveside services and burial will be Wednesday at 11:00am at the Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro with Rev. Carl Ledbetter officiating.

    Honorary Pallbearers will be Clarence Prince and Morris Prince.

    Donell Thompson Akers

    Donell Thompson Akers, 77, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility with her family by her side and under the loving care of her Hospice family.

    She was born in Metter, Georgia on August 28, 1933 to Don and Lillian Thompson. Donell moved to Statesboro at the age of 10.

    She graduated from Statesboro High School in 1950 and University of Georgia in 1954. Donell taught school in College Park, Georgia for 5 years before marrying and moving to New Jersey for one year then returning to Statesboro.

    She was an active member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity Gamma Pi Chapter where she served as house president and corresponding secretary and also the Statesboro Zeta Tau Alpha Alumnae chapter. Donell received her Order of the Shield Award for 50 years of membership and the Zeta Lady for District VII-A in 2003. Also, she was instrumental in colonizing the Zeta Xi Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha at Georgia Southern in 1969 as well as serving as treasurer of the ZTA Alumnae Chapter. She was a proud member of the University of Georgia Bulldog Club and Alumni Club attending every football game possible and many class reunions. Donell was a devoted volunteer for five years at Ogeechee Area Hospice and was fondly known as the "flower lady." She was a member of the Statesboro First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 25 years and was honored with the 2005 Honorary Lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women.

    She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William Thomas (Bill) Akers, Sr.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lillian Akers Brown and Jimmy Hill of Statesboro and Esther and William Vickers of Statesboro; one son and daughter-in-law, William Thomas (Bill T.) and Lisa Akers of Statesboro. Donell is also survived by her five cherished grandchildren, Mary Katherine Brown of Athens and Statesboro, Jessica Donell Vickers, Jeff Vickers, Lauren Akers and Julianne Akers, all of Statesboro; four loving grand-dogs, Sallie, Barney, and Minnie Brown and Angel Vickers; a very loyal and special friend, Jan Martin of Statesboro.

    Donell enjoyed cooking and sharing food with friends and shut-ins. She was graciously involved in her children's and grandchildren's school and extracurricular activities, proudly encouraging and cheering. Donell was an avid reader and loved to crotchet making countless baby blankets for family and friends. Her favorite times were with family and friends watching over her much loved Georgia Bulldogs.

    Visitation will be Friday, April 15, 2011, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

    Graveside services and burial will be Saturday, April 16, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro.

    Pallbearers will be Jack Thompson, James Thompson, Jimmy Musgrove, Tony Musgrove, Andy Smith and Rev. Steve Darby.

    Honorary pallbearers will be Delmous Smith, Clarence Prince, Morris Prince and staff and volunteers of Ogeechee Area Hospice.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
