- Rev'd Canon Larry G. Wilkes
(September 11, 1950 - May 28, 2012)
The Rev'd Canon Larry G. Wilkes passed away Monday, May 28, 2012, at his home in Arnaudville at the age of 61. Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, three adult children, numerous grandchildren, and mother and father.
Larry was a true man of the Lord. His connection with God could be felt by all who crossed his path. He could make anyone smile with his great sense of humor and his personable stories. Family and friends will greatly miss his selfless ability to listen to any problem, large or small, and offer flawless advice. He is remembered for living a life filled with faith, patience, and acceptance.
Larry was born in Dublin, GA, and reared in Augusta, GA. Pursuing a love of medicine, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he served as a Hospital Corpsman for twenty-one years. After his retirement from the Navy in 1989, he answered God's calling and entered into Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1992. He worked at three parishes in southern Virginia for four years. In February 1996, he again answered the call to the sea through a commission to the US Navy as a chaplain. After again retiring from the Navy in 2001, he became associate rector at San Jose Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, FL. In 2003, he and his wife relocated to Arnaudville and he served as rector of the Church of the Ascension for four years, leaving the parish to work as the Canon to the Ordinary. In 2009, he started working as the priest for the Church of the Epiphany in New Iberia, LA.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, located at 303 West Main St., New Iberia, LA. Officiating for the service will be the Rt. Rev'd D. Bruce MacPherson, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Western Louisiana. The family will receive visitors at the church from 12:30 p.m. Saturday until the time of service.
