    • Julia Frerichs Monday, July 5, 1920 - Saturday, April 2, 2016

Julia F. (Meadows) Frerichs, 95, of Beatrice died peacefully on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at her home.

She was born on July 5, 1920 in Vidalia, Georgia, the daughter of Jesse Cleveland and Florence Wilkes Meadows. She graduated from Vidalia High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia. Julia taught second grade for several years before joining the American Red Cross. She attended American University in Washington DC for Red Cross training and was stationed in Augusta, Georgia, where she worked in an Army hospital. She was transferred to Key West Naval Hospital in 1949 where she met her future husband Dr. C. T. Frerichs. She resigned from the Red Cross and they were married on December 10, 1950. Julia and C.T. moved to Rochester, Minnesota in December 1951, and they lived there until 1955 while C. T. completed his fellowship in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Mrs. Frerichs moved to Beatrice, Nebraska in January of 1955 where she and C.T. raised their family. Julia participated in various civic and community activities including serving on the board of the American Red Cross in Beatrice as well as the board of the Martin Luther Home from 1970-1976. She worked with AFS (American Field Service) foreign exchange students and was a member of PEO, DAR, and Fortnightly Club. She aided in the early development of the Community Players along with her friends Virginia Wright and Patricia Morehead. She participated in the early origin of the Bargain Box with Mrs. John Porter. She helped pioneer a training course in proper babysitting techniques with Mrs. Jean Waddell.

Mrs. Frerichs joined St. John Lutheran Church in 1955 and was the first woman to serve on the church council. She also participated in Stephen Ministry and was a member of Sarah Rachel Circle.

Julia enjoyed playing bridge and played often with many close friends. She loved to travel with her husband and saw much of the world including England, Scotland and Germany learning about their ancestors. She made a three month journey by ship through the Panama Canal to Australia and New Zealand. She enjoyed a long visit to Bangkok, Thailand when her daughter Christine was living there, with side visits to the Bridge on the River Kwai, and to India and the Taj Mahal.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. C. T. Frerichs of Beatrice; four daughters, Christine Moran of Beatrice, Frances (Gary) Caldwell of St. Peters, MO, Jane (Charles) Weber of Santa Clarita, CA, and Martha (Scott) Shackelford of Leawood, KS; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Thomas Frerichs Weber, her brother, Dr. J. C. Meadows and his wife Ethel, and a sister, Christine Meadows Taylor and her husband James.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice with Pastor Greg Gabriel officiating.

A memorial has been established to Beatrice Community Hospital Hospice, St. John Lutheran Church, or the Gage County Historical Society with Darlene Spilker, Connie Siefkes and Carolyn Pugsley in charge.

A guestbook for signatures will be available at Fox Funeral Home from 8:00 A.M. Thursday until 9:00 P.M. Friday and at the church one hour preceding the services on Saturday.
