TWO MEN KILLED IN CAR SMASHUP
An apparent head on collision Friday night on U.S. Highway 550 about eight miles north of Aztec killed two men and resulted in serious injuries to a woman passenger. Dead was Alan James Berry, 64, of the Aztec Trading Post, the driver of one car and John Patrick Stefanik, 22, of Denver, Colo. the driver of the second car. Berry's wife, Mrs. Sue W. Berry, 54, was treated at San Juan Hospital for a fractured arm, ribs, lacerations and a possible head injury. She was listed in serious condition Saturday night. San Juan County Sheriff deputies who investigated the accident, which occurred about 9:20 p.m. Friday, said the car driven by Berry was heading south on U.S. 550 with the Stefanik car heading north. Reasons for the collision were not know but deputies were continuing to investigate. Stefanik is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Stefanik of Denver, two brothers and five sisters. Funeral services and burial will be in Denver. In addition to his wife, Berry is survived by a sister, Mrs. S.B. Shaw, Hico, Tex., and a foster son Wayne Russell, Tombstone, Ariz. Funeral services are pending from Cope Memorial Chapel.
BERRY SERVICES SET WEDNESDAY
Funeral services for Allen James Berry, 64, who was killed in a two - car collision Friday night north of Aztec, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cope Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lawrence Onan of Grand Junction, Colo., officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmount Cemetery, Durango, Colo. Pallbearers will be Leroy Atkinson, Bob Flynt, Tom Robards, Glen Skinner, Sonny Turpin, Seligonio Velasquez and William Bowman. Berry's wife, Mrs. Sue Berry, 54, was still listed in serious condition at San Juan Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Berry, who had owned and operated the Aztec Ruins Trading Post in Aztec, had also operated the Hermosa Cliffs Guest Ranch near Durango and at one time owned five trading posts on the Navajo Reservation. From 1927 to 1929 he worked as a construction engineer on the Hopi Tower Lookout Point of the Grand Canyon. Funeral services for the other crash victim, John Patrick Stefanik, 22, will be held at Boulevard Mortuary in Denver, Colo. Local arrangements were under the direction of Cope Memorial Chapel.
Note: Originally buried in Durango, CO. When his wife (Sue) got out of the hospital he was then cremated and ashes scattered. by M.J.
