In memory of
JONATHAN MANTER
who died April 11 1820: aged 90 years 1 month
and 8 days.
Jonathan Manter was the son of George Manter and Katherine Athearn, and the husband of Sarah Chase. He was a Tisbury yeoman. He served in Militia Co. 1757 and in in Sea Coast Defense in 1776.
"Manter's Hill. - The high land on Main street which has its summit near the present Sanitarium. It derived its name from Jonathan Manter who married Sarah Chase in 1755, and began a series of purchases of land in Homes Hole neck two years later, through which he became one of the largest land owners of his day. His property extended from the harbor to Tashmoo, and in the house which he built on this estate, probably about 1755-6, was born, in 1757, his daughter Parnell, one of the "Liberty Pole" heroines."
History of Martha's Vineyard, Annuals of Tisbury, page 8
Also, his birth date, provided by Page 69 "Vital Records of Tisbury, Massachusetts", is 03 March 1730 in Tisbury, Dukes County, Colony of Massachusetts Bay.
