Born in Fayette, Ala., he served with the U.S. Navy and had lived in Kingsport for the past 35 years. Wilks was employed with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department for 25 years, retiring six years ago. While attending Oak Ridge High School, Wilks had his own early morning radio show on WOKE. Music was one of his great loves, according to family members. After returning from the Navy, he worked at various radio and TV stations before joining the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department. According to family members, Wilks loved flying and had his pilot's license. They said he loved growing plants and working in his yard, adding that he fell in love with orchids following a vacation to Hawaii and grew them extensively. Family members also said he enjoyed senior citizen activities at the Renaissance Center. Wilks was preceded in death by his father, J.C. "Jim" Wilks in 1981. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Wilks; son, Scott Wilks and wife, Donna, of Knoxville; daughter, Donna Mischke and husband, Kevin, of Knoxville; mother, Elsie Wilks of Oak Ridge; a sister, Betty Washington of Oak Ridge; and by six grandchildren and his loving dog, Sara. A memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes in Kingsport, with the Rev. Gerald Jones officiating. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Crossroads United Methodist Church, 200 Bays Cove Trail, Kingsport, TN 37660, or the Oak Ridge Humane Society, 1345 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
