- Wister Reid Whitesides, Jr. was born on December 15, 1936 in Miami, FL and raised in Gastonia, NC and Gainesville, FL. He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1954 and joined the US Navy Where he served for 4 years as an electrician. After serving in the US Navy, he married and sold insurance for Gulf Life Ins. Co., in 1974 he moved to Gastonia, NC, where he worked at Homelite, he retired from there and moved back to Gainesville, FL where he worked at the Bookstore on the U of F Campus until he retired.
Reid passed away on August 3rd 2012 at home after a long battle with cancer.
He is survived his wife Kathryn, 5 children and their spouses: Barbara and Chuck Henault, Karen and Rusty Broyles, Brenda and Steve Kinder, Reid Whitesides III, Kevin and Carolann Whitesides; grandchildren; Matthew and Christina, Nicole and Brett, Travis, Heather, Kayla, Katie, Sarah and Cody, Daniel, Patrick, Robbie, Mary, Brandon, Nicholas: great grandchildren; Arianna, Sadie, Shane, Tanner, Maci, Michael and McKenzie. Mr. Whitesides is also survived by 2 brothers, Harvey and Timothy Whitesides.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street, Gainesville, FL.
