- A memorial service will be held Oct. 16 for Oscar M. Lucas Sr. of Forest Grove, formerly of Eugene, who died Oct. 11 from complications following surgery. He was 76.
Lucas was born Dec. 2, 1925, in Memphis, Tenn., to Oscar and Julia Boone Lucas. He married Elba Swack in Elkton, Ky., on March 4, 1946.
He graduated from West End High School in Memphis and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He served in the Army during World War II. He worked in retail newspaper advertising for department stores.
He lived in Illinois, Hawaii, Washington and California before moving to Eugene in 1980 and settling in Forest Grove in 1995.
After retiring, he volunteered with the Willamette National Forest in Eugene and at the Eugene Mission, where he provided ministry and gave sermons. His interests included sports and history, especially the Civil War era. He enjoyed fishing and painting with oils and water colors.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Oscar Jr. of Redmond, Wash., William of Cherry Grove and James of Tacoma; three daughters, Patricia Gregory of Forest Grove, Elizabeth Lucas of Batavia, Ill., and Paula Nichols of Eugene; a brother, Wilmuth of Diamondhead, Miss.; a sister, Evelyn Cutter of Rolla, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
Wednesday's service will be at 1 p.m. at Community Baptist Church in Cornelius. Burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International or to the Community Baptist Church Mission Fund in Cornelius.
