AMERICUS - Mr. Kelly H. Slater, age 97, of Americus died Thursday morning Oct. 1, 2009, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus, after a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at Lee Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Matt Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the family residence 714 Varsity Drive, Americus.
Mr. Slater was born Jan. 9, 1912 in Emanuel County, Georgia, the son of the late George Wallace Slater and Farcy Dickerson Slater. Mr. Slater came to Americus at the age of 21 to work for the Seaboard Railroad. After his retirement from Seaboard Coastline in 1976, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, landscaping his yard and renewing his hobby of wood working. He was delighted to make furniture pieces for his children and grandchildren. He was also able to use his talent to help remodel the sanctuary of Lee Street United Methodist Church and to oversee the construction of the church parsonage.
He was a faithful member of the Lee Street United Methodist Church where he had served on the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board, and was the oldest member. He had been the last surviving member of the Ray Ansley Sunday School.
Mr. Slater is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wallace L. Slater and Patsy of Evans, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law; Edie Vinson and Tim of St. Simons Island, Ga.; grandsons Brian Slater and wife Emma of Augusta, Ga., Kurt Slater of Issaquah, Wash., Marc Vinson and wife Tiffany of Cleveland, Ohio, Scott Vinson and wife Jayme of Brunswick, Ga.; and two great-grandsons, Slater and Pearce Vinson of Brunswick, Ga. as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Slater was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years Nina Graham Slater and a son Harold K. Slater of Americus, also four sisters and two brothers.
