Clayton Lee, 91, of Greensboro, died Monday, August 29, 2011 at Wesley Long Hospital.
Following a private inurnment at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium, a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
Clayton was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and served his country in the U.S. Navy following Midshipman's School at Notre Dame University. He served with the Amphibious forces in the Mediterranean, Pearl Harbor and Okinawa during World War II, completing his service as a Lieutenant. He was a stockbroker for over 40 years with McDaniel Lewis, United Securities and J.C. Bradford.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Young Men's Bible Class at First Presbyterian Church where he was also an usher, the Chinqua-Penn Plantation Board, a member of the Greensboro Country Club for over 50 years and the Greensboro Investors Club for over 60 years. Clayton served as Chairman of the Trustees of the Greensboro Symphony Endowment Fund from the start of the Endowment in 1986 until 2006. He and his wife Caroline, the Chairman of the Fund, endowed a chair to honor their son Scott who is a jazz bassist in New York. Clayton had a lifelong love and involvement in music and enthusiastically supported the Greensboro Symphony, the Music Academy, the NC Symphony and other Arts, through various scholarships he and Caroline established. Socially, one of his favorite outings was the Brown-Gardiner Coffee Group.
Clayton is survived by his wife Caroline Mabe Lee; his children Martha Lee Williamson and husband Harry "Skeeter" of Raleigh, Carver Scott Lee and wife Sue Anne Johnson-Lee of New York, NY and Patricia "Patsy" Lee Stegall and husband Charles of Charlotte; his grandchildren Elizabeth Lee Tomatsu, Caroline Turner Williamson, Jordan Lee Stegall, Aria Anne Lee, Dillon Clayton Stegall and Hunter Farrell Stegall; his brother Russell Lee and wife Anna of Goldsboro; his sister Rachel Lee Williams and husband Rodney of Raleigh; and sister-in-law Patsy Mabe Barton of Eden.
Friends may visit with the family in the Virginia Gilmore Room following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greensboro Symphony Guild Education Fund, PO Box 29224, Greensboro, NC 27429, or to the charity of their choice.
